I’d like to start these shorter posts by talking about the Elemental Assassin series by Jennifer Estep. So far, I like the series. Many of the mistakes made by other female authors in Urban Fantasy (love triangles, too much politics, and not enough butt kicking) are very deftly avoided by Jennifer Estep. The main character in this series is an assassin, and she most certainly knows when it’s time to stop talking and start fighting. Love triangles don’t ever really enter into the picture, largely because she’s not really a romantically minded person, but also because many of the men in her life simply don’t live long enough to become love interests.
Early in the series, the Urban Fantasy elements seemed almost tacked-on. While the main character is perfectly capable of utilizing some elemental magic, she tends to avoid it. While listening to the first book, I was repeatedly left with the impression that the magical elements of the book could have been completely removed, and no real damage would have been done. Bear in mind, this is a good story, but the series doesn’t start with the fantasy elements being very important.
The first few books were enjoyable, but mediocre. I think the fourth book in this series is the one that managed to hook me. I’m looking forward to the next book when it comes out in a few days.
